Pasadena Chapter History: 1948 - 1973
April, 1948 – From “The Secretary” – Pasadena, California: Installed February 12, 1948, by registrar Jean J. Ward. Officers: Mrs. Joan Casserly, president; Miss Catherine Copps, vice-president; Mrs. Florence M. Briggs corresponding secretary; Mrs. Evelyn Finn, treasurer.
February, 1950 – First CPS Study Course at Pasadena City College Adult Education Division sponsored by the Chapter.
July, 1950 – Pasadena receives the Southwestern Vice President’s Award at the National convention in Boston for having the highest percentage of reactivated members in the Southwest District.
July, 1951 – Chapter member, Grace Henderson, attends the National Convention as Pasadena’s representative in the “Miss Secretary of 1951” contest in Houston.
July, 1952 – Chapter members, Dorothy Rummel, attends the National Convention as Pasadena’s candidate for “Secretary of the Year” in Washington, D.C.
March, 1954 – Pasadena Chapter hosts the first Southern California CPS Award dinner.
May, 1955 – Pasadena Chapter sponsors the formation of the Foothill Chapter in Monrovia, California, formally installed on June 30.
1957 – Chapter continues its educational focus by offering three courses in Parliamentary Procedure, self-improvement, and a CPS Review class at Pasadena City College (PCC).
1958 – Pasadena Chapter installs new San Gabriel Valley Chapter on May 24. Chapter member, Joanne Miller elected to the office of Second Vice President of the California Division. Chapter member, Betsy Heim, chosen to serve as the first California Division Historian.
1960 – Several Educational courses were offered by the chapter: parliamentary Law Study course; Secretarial course and a Business Speech course at PCC. An Effective public Speaking course was held at Pasadena High School.
1963 – Pasadena Chapter member, Eugenia Elliott, was appointed to serve on the International Membership Committee as Chairman of the Southwest District during the National Convention in July. On December 5, the chapter installed its first Future Secretaries Association Department (FSA) Chapter at Pasadena City College with 42 charter members. This was the first FSA chapter in the California Division at the Junior College level.
1964 – In March, the Education Committee of Pasadena Chapter sponsors a Human Relations Symposium. In November, the Dean of the Institute for Certifying Secretaries, Dr. Mina Johnson, spoke at the regular chapter meeting.
1967 – Pasadena Chapter wins an award for 15% increase in membership during the International Convention in Dallas.
1968 – In May, California Division presents the chapter with an award for 15% increase in membership.
1970 – In July, the Chapter wins an award at International Convention in New York for Chapter Professional Development – Recognition for Excellence in Educational programming. The CPS Review Course at Pasadena City College, sponsored by Pasadena Chapter, was taught as an accredited class for the first time.
1971 – Pasadena Chapter hosts the Secretary of the Year luncheon during the California Division Annual Meeting.
1972 – Pasadena Chapter hosted the first California Division NSA Forum South in September. The Chapter sponsors a CPS Leadership Forum earlier in the year.
1973 – In May, the Chapter wins an award at the California Division meeting for Membership Retention for retaining 97% of regular members during the 1972/73 year. In July, the Chapter receives an International Award for Chapter Professional Development in recognition for excellence in educational programming.
